--Ultra Low Cost Carrier Launches New Luggage Policy In Lieu of Raising
Fares--
Miramar, Florida (February 6, 2008) -Spirit Airlines has announced
its innovative approach to address rising fuel prices with the introduction of its
new luggage policy. Designed to give customers more flexibility when traveling
and to continue its commitment to offering the lowest possible fares, Spirit's new
luggage policy gives passengers the option to avoid the increased cost of travel
due to rising fuel costs by packing lighter. Less luggage means less weight, which
translates to lower fuel burn and allows Spirit to lower its costs further while
being friendlier to the environment.
Beginning February 20, 2008, Spirit's luggage fees will increase from $5 to $10
per checked piece of luggage if pre-reserved online at
www.spiritair.com, and from $10 to $20 per checked piece of luggage if requested
at the airport. Passengers may still carry on one piece of luggage at no charge.
"Instead of raising every fare across our entire network in response to ever increasing
fuel prices, we are proud to introduce our new luggage policy, which gives our passengers
the opportunity to control their cost of travel by packing lighter," said Barry
Biffle, Spirit's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "But if
you must check luggage, it is 50 percent less when purchased in advance at
www.spiritair.com."
In 2007, Spirit became the first airline in the United States to successfully introduce
the 'a la carte' unbundled approach to the air travel experience. In line
with the automobile and brokerage industries, and even movie theaters, Spirit offers
standard product features and options, with a selection of several optional add-ons
such as checked luggage. Passengers simply choose a low fare and then select
the additional services that match their individual needs.
"We are all about giving our passengers options," continued Biffle. "Our unbundled
approach to air travel allows us to keep our fares low and we're proud to pass these
savings along to our customers. After all, why should someone pay for services they
don't need or use? Over the past year, customers paid on average 55 percent more*
for fares on other carriers from South Florida, demonstrating the massive savings
possible by flying Spirit."
